DoAW is a blockchain performative piece created by Joan Heemskerk, one half of the iconic net art duo JODI. Each mint from the project creates an on-chain wallet whose seed phrase is then used as both visual and audio composition elements within the artwork. Each of the created wallets is airdropped a shaDoAW which anyone can attempt to retrieve. Since the seed phases of every mint are publicly available, Heemskerk creates an interplay between the collectors and bots who may be watching the wallets for any deposits.
DoAW (Dead or Alive Wallet) takes aim at the heart of cryptography: the seed phrase used to create wallets. In this work, the user generates endless wallets, interpreted across the screen in sound, color and words. Upon minting, they capture a point of randomness, storing it as the on-chain ID of the minted NFT. While the NFT is tethered to a single seed, the sub-infinite number of derived private keys score the endless animation.
Unveiling these seed phrases compromises each wallet's security, granting access to the wallet. In addition, a shaDoAW NFT cast into the wallets of the first DoAW mints. To move the shaDoAW, ETH must be deposited, and bots vigilant in the dark forest might intercept any funds before it can escape.
In this interplay of security and art, DoAW explores the nature of revealed secrets while navigating the perilous landscape of blockchain transparency.
⚠️ Note: these are real wallets with exposed keys! Any assets deposited to these wallets are at serious risk for exploits and theft.
